The World Trade Center Returns!
America stand up!
The tragic events of 9/11 is something that the United States will never fully recover from, but ten years later, one World Trade Center building has returned to the NYC skyline.
Construction on Freedom Tower began six years ago at the site of the original World Trade Center Twin Towers. The towers were the tallest buildings in the city before they were destroyed Sept. 11, 2001, when terrorists crash two planes into the building killing thousands of people.
Construction is not expected to end until 2013 or 2014, but construction workers have erected steel columns that will officially make this new World Trade Center taller than New York’s iconic Empire State Building, which currently rises 1,250 feet to the 102nd floor observation deck.
The completed building will stand at 1,776 feet and 104 floors, making it 408 feet taller than the Twin Towers it has replaced, and making it the largest building in the United States, and the third-tallest building in the world.
The building may even claim a height record because of the 408-foot-tall needle that will top it off.
Currently the world’s tallest building is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which stands 2,717 feet.
