Maya’s Lesson

Writer, poet, and in my opinion the most influential literary voices of our time has closed her eyes for the last time.

Maya Angelou’s teachings, and writings have been the source of some much of my inspiration, so it’s only fitting that I take a moment to inspire you with some of her words.

Maya, ingrained in me that span of my hips, the stride of my step and the curl of lips made me a woman, phenomenally, phenomenal woman, that me. She taught that “the first time someone shows you who they are, believe them.” but the I’d say the lesson that resonates most with me is when Maya wrote “my mission in life is not merely to survive but to thrive and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”

If you really dissect that, Maya Angelou did just that. She thrived! She let her passion for the arts and literary expression take her into the lives and hearts of people all over the world. Her compassion is what drove her work with Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, her sense of humor shine through her literary work, her personality was seen in interviews and her numerous movie appearances, and finally everything she did she did with elegance, class, and heir of distinction earning numerous awards including Grammys, the Presidential Award of Freedom, The National Medal Of The Arts, and a host of others.

So today I ask you are you just merely surviving or are you thriving with passion, compassion humor and some style?
